In past 26 years whenever someone asked me, “what do I want to be in life?”. Like John Lennon, I replied with a single word “Happy”. But to be honest there were very few moments, where I was happy. Yes every day I laugh out laud; even lauder than all those people sitting with me, talking to me or working with me. Does it mean I am happier than them? No, I do not think so. Their laugh may not be as lauder as mine; but their laugh echoes more than mine; it’s simply because it comes from deep inside. The smile on their faces lasts longer than mine.  There is a simple difference between me & those people; that is- I try to look for those moments which can give me happiness; which I lack in life. But for those people the happiness is already inside them. They are really happy; they just need some moments, to show that happiness by letting them out.

According to the Chinese proverb-

“If you want happiness for an hour, Take a nap.
If you want happiness for a day, Go fishing.
If you want happiness for a year, Inherit a fortune.
If you want happiness for a lifetime, Help someone else.”

But I do not feel it’s true. And I really mean it. Happiness is not that much simple; a person can’t get happiness by just helping someone else. To help someone else, a person need to help himself first to reach to a position; where he can help someone else without hurting himself.

For the sake of writing or if I am not wrong then for the sake of spreading some words of wisdom; I may say- “For a mother happiness may be holding her new born child in her hands, for a father it may be seeing his son or daughter achieve those things in life, which he could not. For a son & daughter the happiness lies in seeing their parents proud of them and seeing them smiling, healthy and satisfied. Yes these moments give us happiness; but for me the real happiness lies much deeper. Being a son/ daughter, father/mother, being a husband/wife we find the happiness in the happiness of those people who are precious to us. But  we are so busy playing these different roles in life we somehow sometimes forget that, there is a “me” and “myself” among all of us; which has some dreams and some aspirations from life. But somehow within the rush of life we forget to respect & value these inner thoughts. We start compromising with everything in order to meet the need & demand o f life. If with my own experience and being practical, I would say- “For me Happiness lies in experiencing a moment we all wait for …we all strive for… we all dream for. It may be anything depending on the individual.”

As an individual we all want to achieve something; we all want to get respect from the society we live in or at least from the people we live with. Happiness may be lies in that moment when a person can realize his own existence rather than letting other feel his existence.

Few days earlier I watched the movie “The pursuit of Happy-ness”. I can tell you it’s not only the real story of Christopher Gardner. But somehow it’s a story of millions of the people across the world; who struggle in their own ways in pursuit of happiness. They lose their precious things in order to chase that dream which is going to give them happiness. But thing is that, how many of us do not quit until they reach there.

We all take criticism of others on our jobs and opinions on us too seriously; yes opinions & criticism are very important ingredients for our growth. But sometimes taking these things too seriously comes in the way of our happiness.

In the movie “The pursuit of Happy-ness” one dialogue which Will Smith delivers to his son, which I am going to repeat here is so true-

“Don’t ever let someone tell you that you can’t do something. Not even me. You got a dream, you gotta protect it. When people can’t do something themselves, they’re gonna tell you that you can’t do it. You want something, go get it. Period.”

Yes we all need to walk towards our dreams while protecting it from others. The real happiness lies there.  We can reach there, until & unless we choose to walk on a path someone else chooses for us.

Just walk, walk & walk singing these lines  Written by Mahalia Jackson with a smiling face; whenever you will feel alone or disappointed, whenever someone will throw a stone at you to break your dreams or someone else separates his/her path from yours thinking that you can never reach there. Just hold on to those hands which have faith and confidence on your dreams; I can assure you- “One day We will all meet in that place; where happiness lies for us.”

  2. Makes me re-watch that Will Smith movie. I loved it. There is also one saying that popped up while reading this post. It was said by a contemporary public speaker. He said, “Do not just shoot for the moon (somebody already did that!). Shoot for Mars!”

    • Addie let me tell you That’s what I always try to do; that is to shoot for Mars. But I have not heard this speaker’s words before. But after reading them, now I have to shoot for Venus, as somebody else already trying to do that. :)

  3. When I did my citizenship, the words “life, liberty and pursuit of happiness” as our basic rights echoed in my thoughts. Three simple words most of us take for granted or missed because of the so many distractions in our lives. As always, bro, your words a blessed with heart-felt words that inspires us all.     • I am not sure my words have that much power in them to inspire you or not, but let me tell you that your comments have enough power to inspire me. Yes these three words are so important to person. We sometime ignore them in the rush of life.

  4. Lots to think on here Arindam . . . happiness, so elusive yet always what we hope for. My first thought as I was reading this was how so many tell us how to be happy but truly, do they hold the key to happiness? Another thing to think on!
    I love the last words from M. Jackson’s song . . .give me the strength to climb it.

    • Yes even I always wonder, how can happiness lies in so many different things people talk about. Through this post, I just tried to add one more interpretation of happiness. :) Yes the M. Jackson song is a really inspiring one.

  5. Reading your post, I asked myself when it was the last time, I was truly happy. It was May the first. First really sunny day – and I was on my way taking photos of my hometown Cologne, which I wanted to do for weeks! When I saw all the beauty (due to the Maypoles) I felt so free and in such a good mood! So I guess, there lies truth in your words. When we achieve something, making our dreams come true it comes along with happiness. Great Post, Arindam! I think I have to watch that movie soon again, thanks for the reminder.

    • Cassie, Yes you are somehow right, while saying that achievements bring happiness. But it’s actually a moment we live for; where the real happiness lies. We all born with some talents, wish some desires and with some aspiration. So may be the moment we live for has some how connection with all these elements.
      And I am glad to hear that, your dream came true on May 1st. But one more thing which I always believe is very important aspect of live is the realization of dream. Sometimes, what we think a dream is nothing other than just an illusion. So we need to spend sometimes to realize that dream.

      • I meant not just any achievement brings happiness. I have accomplished a lot in the past year. But in this moment I could really feel the happiness, because this was something I was longing for deep from my heart. I felt so connected to the world. I am not quite sure yet, if these photos will be part of anything big in my life, but I will find out. However that may be – that day I felt true happiness. Maybe that had to do with my view on the world that day, anything was possible and I was just about to discover all the beauty the world has to offer.

        I have to ask, what do you mean with realizing the dream? Make it come true or finding out what this dream is?

        • For me realizing the dream is all about finding out what we really want from life. I always believe we all come to this world to do a specific job. And to do that, God has given us some talents as gift. Now as human beings we need to gather the courage to fight for that dream and the strength to walk towards the dream even though we fall; so that we can reach there.
          And yes it really does not matter if those photos will be part of anything being in life or not; until they hold importance to you. Terms like dream, happiness, success are going to vary from person to person. Cassie, I am really glad to hear that, you are finding happiness in whatever things you are doing.

    • Is it really true that, such thing could happen only in America. May be that’s why I always dream of moving to that part of world. :)
      Yes, it’s true that, in my country lots of other factor influence a person’s career and dream. There is a saying in this part of world, on which I do not have much belief; that is”If you can’t make it, then fake it”. What I believe is “If you can’t make it, try harder to make it rather than faking it”. :)

  7. Yes, I saw the movie and if I remember correctly, it is based on a real life. You may already know that.

    Sit in a field and try to grab butterflies. You will have little success. Sit quietly and still. A butterfly will quite likely land on you. That’s the way happiness operates, I find. Happiness is the journey; not the destination, I’ve been told. No wonder it’s easy to see it in retrospect. However, Arindam, meditation can take up to our place of true happiness, peace and joy.

    Mark Nepo wrote “If you try to comprehend air before breathing it, you will die.”

    For me, there’s a lesson there for happiness, too. Happiness may be a decision. XO

    I like your version of happiness. I have never heard of this butterflies quote before. And it’s so meaningful.
    But I think sometimes, the moment which stored happiness in them for us failed to make us happy. I think it has something to do with the circumstances of that person. I hope happiness lies in enjoying what we are doing, earning more than we are spending and sleeping more than we are dreaming. :)

    I have also written about ‘Happiness’…you may want to read it when you have time…

    I do believe that ” happiness is an attitude…a state of mind…a conscious choice…no one is in control of our happiness but ourself…it is not a destination but a journey…because the time for happiness is now…the ongoing present moment…”

    This comes with lots of prayers for happiness and inner peace…now and always…
